Facial Keloids – Case Study 1 – Disastrous outcome after Surgery:
Facial and Neck Keloids
This patient presented in 2012 - at age of 22 – with multiple facial and neck keloids that were present for about five years. He had previously been treated with multiple steroid injections. Some of the keloids were also removed surgically. Despite all these treatments, the keloids had continued to grow.
All the keloids were treated with combination of intralesional steroids and cryotherapy. The images below depict noticeable reduction in the mass of all treated keloids four weeks after the treatment.

Due to distance, the patient was unable to travel back to new to continue with the treatment. The local dermatologist, despite seeing the improvements from cryotherapy, chose not to follow Dr. Tirgan’s guidance. Thereafter, the patient was treated under his care and was treated with more surgery and radiation therapy to his neck. Below are the images that the family sent to Dr. Tirgan in December 2019.

Advancing Neck and Face Keloid
This is the unfortunate result of careless management of facial and neck keloids. It is simply a wishful thinking that one can surgically remove a keloid from the skin and will not have to deal with consequences of this action. Surgery often triggers formation of much larger keloids.
